About the Academy

A Club
With Purpose

Addlestone Boxing Academy is a proposed not-for-profit community boxing club being developed for Addlestone, Surrey. We are at the proposal stage | premises are actively being sought and community support is what makes this happen.

Our Mission

Built for the
Community

Addlestone Boxing Academy exists to provide structured, professional boxing coaching to young people and the wider community in Addlestone and the surrounding area of Surrey.

We are a not-for-profit initiative. Every penny raised goes back into the academy | into coaching, equipment, premises, and ensuring that cost is never a barrier to participation.

Our mission is simple: give young people a structured environment, a positive community, and the tools to build discipline, resilience, and self-respect through the sport of boxing.

The Vision

What We Want to Build

A Proper Boxing Gym

A fully equipped boxing facility with bags, rings, and professional coaching | a real gym, not a leisure centre add-on.

Structured Coaching Programmes

Beginner through to competitive pathways, led by qualified coaches. Open to all ages and abilities.

Youth Development

Dedicated sessions for young people, combining boxing with mentoring, personal development, and life skills.

Community Outreach

Partnerships with local schools, youth services, and community organisations to reach those who need it most.

Affordable Access

Subsidised memberships and bursary places to ensure that cost is never a reason someone cannot train.

A Safe Environment

A disciplined, respectful, and safe space where every member is accountable and every coach is qualified.

Who It Serves

Who It Will Help

Addlestone Boxing Academy is for everyone | but it is built with those in mind who need it most. Young people without structure. Teenagers at risk of disengagement. Adults looking for discipline and community. Families who want a safe, positive environment for their children.

Boxing does not discriminate. It does not care about your background, your school record, or where you come from. It cares about your effort, your discipline, and your commitment to improving. That is the culture we will build.

Young People (8–18)

Structured sessions, mentoring, and a positive peer environment.

Adults (18+)

Fitness, technique, and competitive pathways for all levels.

At-Risk Youth

Outreach partnerships with schools and youth services.

The Wider Community

Open membership and community events for all residents.

The Evidence

The Case for Boxing

The claims we make about the value of a boxing academy are grounded in published evidence. The honest position is that the evidence is strongest for individual outcomes such as mental health, discipline, and engagement. Community-level impact is most significant when a club works alongside schools, local authorities, and youth services. That is exactly the model we intend to follow.

Mental Health

Evidence: Moderate

A scoping review of boxing interventions published in the National Institutes of Health database found reductions in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress across multiple studies, particularly in non-contact boxing exercise settings. Broader systematic reviews consistently show that structured physical activity improves mental health and wellbeing in adolescents, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Youth Engagement and Crime Prevention

Evidence: Moderate

The UK Government's Youth Sports Fund was built on emerging evidence that sport-based interventions can improve offending outcomes for young people. The Local Government Association has highlighted the Ministry of Justice SportPlus approach for young people at risk of entering the youth justice system. England Boxing is currently participating in a formal study, Moves Different, testing whether community boxing reduces youth offending compared with gym access alone.

Community and Social Outcomes

Evidence: Moderate

Sport England's Active Lives framework measures social outcomes from sport and physical activity, including mental wellbeing and social trust. Reviews of sport and martial arts literature indicate that participation can support self-control, confidence, social support, and pro-social development. The Alliance of Sport's review of social impacts found that sport clubs can increase belonging, reduce isolation, and strengthen community connection, particularly where coaching is mentoring-led rather than purely competitive.

Healthy Ageing and Physical Wellbeing

Evidence: Strong (physical activity generally)

NHS England states that the benefits of regular physical activity far outweigh the risks across the lifespan. Parliamentary and NIHR material both link higher activity levels with better health outcomes and lower risk of early death in older adults. A boxing club that offers age-appropriate activity can contribute meaningfully to healthy ageing for adult and older members.

Our Position

"Evidence suggests that structured sport-based interventions, particularly those combining coaching, mentoring, and positive role models, can improve mental wellbeing, build discipline and resilience, strengthen social connection, and support better outcomes for young people at risk of anti-social behaviour. Boxing clubs can be especially effective where they provide routine, trusted adults, and a safe environment rooted in high standards and community purpose. Wider area-level impact is strongest when clubs work alongside schools, police, councils, and local partners."
